What are Fine and Gross Motor Skills?

Occupational therapists use a variety of modalities to further develop fine or gross motor skills. Occupational therapists work with specialised equipment, as well as everyday items to continue training and development when at home.

Gross motor can refer to larger movements such as:

  • Sitting

  • Crawling

  • Walking

  • Running

  • Climbing

Fine motor skills involve smaller muscles commonly with the arm and hand such as:

  • Pinching

  • Grasping

  • Writing

  • Reaching

  • Manipulating

  • Doing up fastenings
