Executive Functioning, Self-Regulation & Sensory Processing
What is Executive Functioning?
Executive function is the term used to describe our ability to perform skills such as planning, focus, attention sequencing, etc. This skill closely works with our self-regulation. Our brain needs to be able to plan, filter and prioritise tasks, and children are most in need of support in these areas as we are not born with this skill. Scaffolding helps children practice necessary skills that can help establish routines, behaviours, and develop supportive relationships.
What is Sensory Processing?
At the foundation of every aspect of learning is having a well-regulated body in the sensory environment. The ability to process each and every sense.
Processing sensory information is a vital element of learning for all especially children. Occupational Therapists will assess, understand and provide opportunities for children to learn and grow in a sensory-safe environment and may encourage exposure to different sensory stimuli to challenge behaviour safely by providing sensory integration techniques.
What is Self-Regulation?
Self-regulation is the ability to adjust, process, and respond to internal and external stimuli which results in a behaviour response. OTs assist children and adults to identify their strong emotions and how to navigate and respond to strong emotions. As a child learns to self-regulate, skills such as concentrating, sharing, and taking turns also develop. Bambini Occupational Therapists can provide intervention to assist children and adults to able to self-regulate across many environments.
